Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) invites participants to use simple meditation techniques and gentle movement to notice thoughts, emotions or sensations that arise and to learn to be more present to their experience.
- To stay in touch with the present moment and be less caught up in negative thought patterns
- To develop more helpful responses to stress
- To use simple meditation techniques which can transform daily life, including sitting meditation exercises (eg mindfulness of breathing), body scan and yoga
The course comprises eight 2hr group sessions and an optional one day retreat. Participants are invited to develop their own practice through weekly homework (about 45 mins a day). We provide course materials and CDs to help with this. Research has consistently shown that mindfulness can help people reduce their stress levels and protect against depression.
Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy is now recommended in the NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) guidelines for treating recurrent depression. Mindfulness has also been shown to help people manage a range of other health conditions, including chronic pain, anxiety, fatigue, insomnia, eating disorders and addictions, It has also been shown to improve immune system response and speed healing.
