Christian MurphyChristian Murphy

Christian has been working as a psychotherapist since 1999, and now runs a private practice, seeing clients in Clapham, SW4. Throughout his practice, he has specialised in workplace and employment issues. He enjoys helping people to address the many pressures they face in the modern workplace This has included supporting clients through processes of organisational change, the taking up of new management roles and dealing with workplace conflict.

Specialist areas
Christian’s main interest is in using a psychoanalytic approach to explore with clients what is going on underneath the surface of their workplaces and their experience of their jobs. This includes looking at how each of us can interpret and experience our current working life in terms of earlier family roles and relationships, as well as our underlying blocks and drivers.

This psychoanalytic approach is augmented by the use of techniques from both Transactional Analysis and EMDR. EMDR is a very effective form of short-term therapy, which can be used to identify and address self-limiting negative beliefs which can prevent people from expressing their full potential. Experience has shown Christian that people can step aside from or move past difficult workplace issues by developing an understanding of the personal underlying issues the current challenge touches upon.

Approach and methodology
Sessions involve an ongoing description and examination of the current issues. A specific approach can then be taken to the most important issues. Many issues can be explored in terms of the internal and external obstacles an individual faces in

  • Managing the boundaries within their organisation
  • Understanding and taking up their role within the organisation
  • Understanding and taking up the key tasks of their role
  • Dealing with issues of authority, including their willingness to take up their own formal and informal authority

Career highlights (including clinical experience)
Christian’s workplace issues expertise is informed by his legal experience in the commercial sector, which has included work in a city law firm and a large plc. He has also worked as a manger in a large employee assistance programme, providing support and various workplace interventions to employees, their manager and their HR departments. Also, he has managed large teams of practitioners providing counselling within the NHS.

Relevant qualifications and memberships
Christian has completed a four year training in Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy at The Metanoia Institute, and is accredited as a counsellor and psychotherapist with The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. He has completed the Post-Graduate Diploma in the Psychodynamics of Human Development offered by The British Association of Psychotherapists, as well as the one-year Introduction to Group Analysis course at The Institute of Group Analysis.

He is a qualified supervisor of counsellors and psychotherapists, having completed The Minster Centre Diploma in Supervision. His development as a practitioner continues through his attendance at group relations conferences, including those organised by the A.K. Rice Institute, and through advanced training at The SITE for Contemporary Psychoanalysis.
